The Isle of Skye - Skye Map - Places on Skye
The Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides. With a land mass of over 535 square miles, at no point are you more than 5 miles from the sea. Skye is well known for its scenery, the Cuillin, its many sea lochs and the Trotternish Ridge. It also has some spectacular weather, with regulary stormy and often frightening winds in winter, it has quite high rainfall which varies significantly over the island mainly influenced by the proximity of the mountains.
There are two Gaelic names for Skye, Eilean a'Cheo, the isle of the mist and Eilean Sgiathanach, because it rests on the storm swept sea like a bird with outstretched wings.
Skye is renowned for its spectacular scenery, vibrant culture and heritage, as well as its abundant wildlife including the golden eagle, sea eagle, red deer and the otter. The west of Skye is a popular location for cetacean spotting.
