Welcome to The Homer Self Catering Cottage, Kilmuir, Isle of Skye
Our self catering accommodation 'The Homer' is a compact, cosy cottage with fantastic panoramic views across the Minch towards the Outer Hebrides. It has a long history. It was originally built in 1948 by the Ministry of Defence as a post war radio location. When you stand on this sight it is easily understood why it was situated here.
The location Hungladder, from the Norse meaning 'Hunn's residence,' is a quiet crofting township situated in the parish of Kilmuir in the north of the island. It is the perfect location for a tranquil and relaxing holiday and it is from here that one can, arguably, enjoy the best sunsets on the west coast of Scotland. The panoramic view across the Minch towards the Outer Hebrides is quite simply spectacular.
Kilmuir, renouned as being the 'Granary of Skye' is still largely a Gaelic speaking community and offers a real experience of island life. It offers plenty of scope for walking, fishing, cycling and bird watching and is home to Skye's only outdoor centre, the Whitewave Outdoor Centre, which offers sea kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, hillwalking, climbing and archery. There is also the Skye Museum of Island Life to visit, a superb exhibition of island life throughout the past century. Near to here you will find the grave and monument of Flora MacDonald, the Highland heroine and preserver of Bonnie Prince Charlie, situated within a most historic cemetery. These are both within walking distance from the cottage.
For a longer treck, the ruin of Duntulm Castle, ancient seat of the Clan MacDonald, lies a couple of miles along the coast road towards Staffin. A further mile or two will take you to the starting point for a walk to Rubha Hunish, where you can sit in the comfortably bothy and watch for the minky whales.
During the summer months, day trips to the Outer Hebrides are available from Uig. Uig is only a short distance of 5 miles from Kilmuir and here there are two stores where you can buy food and essentials. There is also a Post Office, a petrol station, a cafe, a hotel, two pubs, a pottery and a brewery in the village.

The building was completely renovated in 1994 and since then many guests have enjoyed a wonderful holiday here. There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. The beds are made up including all linen and they are fitted with electric blankets for colder days. The view from the double room looks towards the sea and the Outer Hebrides, while the twin room enjoys a view of the Trotternish hills.
There is a shower room close to the bedrooms and we provide one bath and hand towel per person. There is a relaxing sitting room with dining area within. It overlooks the sea and commands a splendid view of the surrounding area. There is a colour television, DVD player, games and ample reading material. The kitchen is well equipped with fridge freezer, electric cooker, automatic washing machine and microwave oven. It too has a splendid view of the district of Kilmuir. Electricity is operated by a £1 coin meter and usually costs about £7 a week.
The cottage is available to rent all year round and the maximum number of guests is four persons. Children are most welcome. A high-chair and cot can be provided by arrangement and there is ample safe playing area. Time of arrival is 3.00 p.m. on the agreed day and departure time is no later that 10.00 a.m. in order to allow us to prepare the cottage thoroughly for our next guests.

After passing through the centre of Uig, turn right along the A855 towards Kilmuir for 5 miles. You will pass through the townships of Lincro and Kilvaxter and will see the local primary school and two churches on the right hand side.
